![season 12 cast]()
Hi friends! Project Runway is back, and this season is already off to a huge start! Wacky contestants! New Rules (we’ll get to that later)! More Tim Gunn! Unicorns! And I watched it all twice, just for you. (and a little bit for me). We kick off this season premiere at Wallkill Airpark, where designers are showing up in small groups and making their awkward introductions. There’s Sandro, a russian guy with a killer moustache who might be a cousin of SNL’s “Wild and crazy guys” and who is getting his American Dream. Which is kind of sweet. And now it’s less than a minute in and we get our first “Sorry, bitches!” from Helen who tells us that she’s going to rub people the wrong way, like it’s her goal. Which it probably is. There’s Ken, with his bow tie tattoo who is a “force to be reckoned with”. Alexander, a spicy, manic-panic ginger asks “why do you think we’re at an airport?” and THs that some people love him and some people hate him and there’s not really an in between. Timothy, sort of a modern-day Peter Pan (on first impression) wonders if they will be making dresses out of “DANDELIONS!” or ripping apart old planes, while Dom, with her giant feather earrings worries that they might be jumping out of planes. Enter Heidi and Tim. They welcome the designers to a ‘different kind of runway’. Cute. Heidi reminds us all that only 15 of the 16 designers are present. It’s time to reveal which previous season loser the viewers have chosen for a Runway redemption. The choices were Kate from season 11 (please not her), Valerie from season 8 (oh, yay! I like her!), and Ramon from season 6 (who?). A small plane approaches and lands and Helen THs that it better not be Kate because she’s a bitch and “we’re totally gonna clash”, so of course now it’s pretty clear that Kate will be getting out of the plane. Surprise! It’s Kate. She arrives to lukewarm applause. Karen is excited, she actually voted for Kate. And now we get the Kate is a bitch montage from last season. Once Kate joins the other designers, Heidi asks if they think she has an advantage because she’s been here before. Some say yes, but Tim pipes up and says that after the first couple of challenges there’s really no more advantange and Kate points out that she’s actually under more pressure because the judges will expect more from her this time around. Fair point. We meet Justin the first deaf contestant, after Tim points out why there is an ASL interpreter there. Heidi has an announcement. The winner of season 12 will receive a prize package worth over HALF A MILLION DOLLARS. Tim confirms that it is the biggest prize in the history of the show, and the designers freak out appropriately. Then Tim says “the sky’s the limit (episode title), right Heidi?” and suddenly there is a plane overhead. [...]
