DWTS Recap: Send in the Clowns

Hi, Trashies. It’s Cirque du Soleil night on Dancing with the Stars. Len is going to hate these routines. Oh wait, Len is back in London now as head judge on Strictly Come Dancing. That means that Bruno is head judge, I guess. So, yeah, bring on the frippery!

First up, Calvin and Lindsay are dancing a Charleston inspired the by the Cirque show Kurious. His wife comes to rehearsal to offer some support and I have to say that they’re really cute together.

I love watching Calvin dance. He’s so surprisingly light on his feet and you can tell that he’s having fun. I just wish he’d change up his expression from time to time. That constant grin looks so robotic. Julianne, who for some reason is wearing a giant rhinestone thing on her head, loved the dance, but just wanted to see a little bit more energy at the end. Because Len isn’t here to bring the sanity, Bruno is in full flail form. Carrie Ann is letting all the lifts go because it’s Cirque du Soleil night and they’re to be excited. That being said, she’s super impressed by their lifts.

Scores:
Carrie Ann – 8
Julianne – 7
Bruno – 8

That seems low considering all the praise.

Oh, surprise, emotions ran high with Maureen. I’m fine with people being emotional, but she just takes it way too far over the top. It all seems like an act. It even seems like Artem is sick of Maureen’s shit.

I get that the red bird was part of the original show, but it was just a distraction here. It added literally nothing to the dance. Bruno barely starts talking and Maureen is crying again. Carrie Ann was worried that Maureen would be too demure for this dance, but she did a good job of maintaining the focus and her connection to Artem. Julianne just agrees with Bruno’s and Carrie Ann’s criticism and then adds something about embracing struggles and trusting Artem.

Scores:
Carrie Ann – 8
Julianne – 8
Bruno – 8

Yeah, whatever. There’s no way that was better than Calvin, but Maureen gets the sympathy vote this week, I guess.

Someone named Jana goes with Gleb to go see the Beatles-themed Cirque du Soleil show. That’s about it. My God, she is the most boring contestant ever.

That was fine. That’s pretty much all I can say about the dance. Carrie Ann says that Jana is a really good dances, but she freezes up from time to time. Julianne wants them to just break out of the middle and Jana needs to learn how to spot to keep her dances from getting stiff. I just give up trying to figure out what Bruno is talking about.

Scores:
Carrie Ann – 8
Julianne – 7
Bruno – 8

So, there will be nothing lower than a 7 tonight because Len isn’t here.

Why is Derek the only pro that gets a lot of interview time in the rehearsal footage? Also, Marilu apparently has a photographic memory, but she doesn’t have the greatest muscle memory and that hinders her dancing.

Derek danced a really awesome paso doble. Marilu was also there. So, yeah, it was pretty much how most of Derek’s routines go. Julianne says some stuff about “the essence of ka” and all I can think of is The Dark Tower. She then points out that Marilu is in her head too much. Bruno points out what I did – Marilu just can’t match up with Derek. Finally, Carrie Ann says that Marilu is trying to force the intensity too much.

Scores:
Carrie Ann – 7
Julianne – 7
Bruno – 7

The audience boos, but that was fair.

So, apparently, last week, Amber heard Julianne say that she was uncomfortable watching her dance and felt shamed. Now, I’m not one to say that someone’s feelings aren’t valid, but I didn’t that comment was directed at Amber or her body. It seemed like she was just a bit uncomfortable because the choreography was unnecessarily raunchy. Granted, there’s not much one can do with the song “Big Booty” that wouldn’t be raunchy, but that’s more the fault of production and nothing that Amber or Maks did. I kind of like that Amber’s response is to say, “Fuck it! I’m sexy. What can ya do?” It helps that she’s dancing an Argentine tango to a song from a burlesque show.

That was easily Amber’s best dance. You could tell that she was just 100% in it and not holding back. Also, Amber handles the whole issue with Julianne with a lot of class. She simply said she felt embarrassed because it seems like the comment wasn’t about the dance. She also recognizes that it could have been a simple misunderstanding. Julianne responds with…words? I honestly have no idea what she’s talking about. It ends with her saying she’s judging everyone on the show solely for their dancing. With that being said, Julianne is really happy that Amber did a dance that was just her – no wigs or crazy costumes. I think Bruno needs a cold shower. Carrie Ann is just talking in cliches about being your true self through dance.
