Oh, Trashmii. Twelve weeks flew by. Just a month ago I was scratching my head trying to figure out where this season was going. It was a simpler time. A time when I only JOKED that Terence Winter mocked me with his monkey pants. It was a time when I still had full faith that everything would come together in a viscerally exciting way that made sense to the story being told. (JIMMY!) Terence Winter laughed at that faith. Then he punched it in the neck, kicked it in the ribs and told me it was stupid. And then he laughed some more. Because he’s a jerk. Before we get to that, though, previously on Boardwalk Empire, Chalky and Daughter went to Havre de Grace to hide out with Chalky’s friend Louis Gossett Jr. who was old, blind and mean. And fodder to get shot by Narcisse’s men so his nephew the teddy bear could prove he was tough. And at some point Daughter ran away because she knew Narcisse would find them and she wasn’t going to be there when he did. Also Gillian’s luck finally ran out when she thought she was happy and in love and marrying Roy until he killed that guy they had dinner with and Gillian told him all he needed to do was deny and stay piss drunk and he could totally live with killing a guy because that’s how she dealt with killing Roger. Well, she used heroin but that’s only because liquor is unladylike. Then Roy told her he wasn’t really with Piggly Wiggly, he was a Pinkerton detective Uncle Jun hired to prove Gillian was a lowdown, dirty liar, cheat and murderer. Finally, the brothers Thompson. Nucky gets a hilariously unhinged phone call in the middle of the night from Means warning about a skunk … in his cellar but doesn’t pay it much mind. Meanwhile, Eli deals with his Sophie’s choice by staying drunk and bitter before finally snapping at June for talking about “the blue-eyed, baby-faced insurance salesman” to Nucky. Nucky’s wise to Eli’s moods and realizes he might be that skunk in the cellar, and not just because he reeks. He tries to get “Will” to sell out his father but even “Will’s” not that much of a shit. Not that Nucky needs any actual evidence, anyway, he just wants to prove that “Will” likes him better. Fade up on … oh, great. “Written by Terence Winter (and Howard Korder). Directed by Tim van Patten.” I remember a time when that combo (with or without Korder) meant good things. Now? Not so much. Also, I’d like to recognize the awesomeness of the wardrobe people because Nucky’s suit in the opening credits looks so anachronistic compared to what he’s wearing now. He looks olde-timey even compared to his 1924 wardrobe. Back to the episode. Fade up on a stormy night and a living van Gogh painting of beach grass swaying in the wind. Sally’s annoyingly familiar voice tells […]
